I own an American car!
My wife unknowingly (sigh) parked where she ought not to have for 5 hours. They wrote her two tickets for violating the 2 hour parking sign. I have never seen tickets stacked like this, except for that episode of Simpsons where Barney falls off the wagon , steals Homer’s car, and leaves it in New York City. Usually if you done bad, you get the one ticket for the violation that day... But then again, this is our first time dealing with Kirkland.
I want to complain, but I guess I can’t. Oh wait, I found something I will complain about: $5 processing fee.

I remember in college, the campus police would basically write you a ticket every time they passed your car if it was parked in a wrong place. A buddy of mine came back to a stack of tickets just like that Simpson’s episode after having his car parked in a faculty lot for a week.
His grand daddy donated a lot of money to the school so they let him off with a warning.
I spent my formative years in Philly - if you’ve ever watched Parking Wars, it isn’t really that overblown. They totally double or triple up on tickets like that.

That's absurd. I would only pay one ticket and fight the second. You can only violate it once. It's the rules.

yeah I found that out in college.
They can no longer chalk the tires , but they can chalk the street.

It doesn’t *seem* right.... She violated the 2 hour rule... how can she violate it every two hours if it’s been violated in one parking instance ? Doesn’t that mean they could write a ticket for every moment over 2 hours?

I got a meter not paid twice a day for a week and a half once. When the bylaw officer left the station. And when he came back at the end of the day.
I may have slept with his daughter to make up for it... or not. The mid 90s are a bit fuzzy.

I’ve had them stacked before at an expired meter (thought metering ended at 6, actually ended at 10). They wrote one every time they walked by, which was also twice.
I’ve also had a ticket at 5:58pm on a 6pm meter. I feel certain they sat and waited.

They don't even know it is a Vibe, so no getting out there. That's tough. I've never seen a 2 hour parking sign enforced around here. Much less the free parking in the fire lanes.

Fuzzy daughter? I’m not here to judge.
![]() 08/03/2020 at 21:21 |

I take it she parked in one spot only - not in both the 10 (left citation) and 100 (right) b locks of Main St S? That kind of mistake on their part is often good for a dismissal. Traffic court judges are sticklers for details like that.
Pay the fine in unrolled pennies as an act of protest.

One time I was in a city where parking was free after 8pm. I parked in a lot at like 545 and paid the meter for three hours.
I got a ticket at 738pm. The photo online was clearly the (empty!) meter next to me that was expired. Assholes.
![]() 08/03/2020 at 21:32 |

I think that might actually work against the dismissal, as it could be seen as the car having moved in between, thereby being involved in two completely separate violations.

Not if the photographs don’t support the listed address of infraction.

The Kirkland Municipal Code doesn’t give any indication that you can get multiple tickets. It would appear to indicate that you are committing a single offense for parking longer than the marked time.

It will clearly cost far more in time and money to fight the second ticket. The question is whether it’s worth the effort to make a point or not.
![]() 08/03/2020 at 21:42 |

I’d pay the first and challenge the second , but I wouldn’t really e xpect to win on the merits, just to catch the administrative “judge” in a good mood . Maybe raise the fact that Officer Worldseth marked the car to start the clock on the second ticket before he even wrote the first one, which seems like especially nickel-and-dime bullshit . This is the most Kirkland thing I’ve ever seen in my life.

The car didn’t move, she only parked once so she can only get one ticket. Get a lawyer and sue them for everything they've got.

I am a lawyer and this is a $35 parking violation that almost certainly follows the letter of the law . Do not do this.

Killjoy.
![]() 08/03/2020 at 21:54 |

The street in question is one block long and has three parking spaces, and the car clearly didn’t move because the officer marked the tire for the second infraction before writing the first. The address discrepancy is probably worth a try but I bet it won’t work.

I already said I was a lawyer, didn’t I?

Kirkland parking enforcement is notoriously awful. I'm surprised they don't give firetrucks a boot for parking in fire lanes

I know it may not be worth the effort, but this feels very much like a “fuck you, just because we can” kind of citation.
I’ve had two over-time tickets dismissed, 1 due to incorrect car color listed (it was clearly grey, not blue), 1 due to wrong model listed (Volvo 240, not 740, Officer Fatfinger ). The former was in downtown Kirkland, not far from the scene of Mrs. Dr. Zoidberg’s crime.

She probably smelled like patchouli.

If the second ticket was stamped less than two hours after the second one, then I’d be on board with you. I could see an argument being made for the two hours restarting every two hours.

Oh that's not bad, SF tows you so fast it's impressive.

I wonder how this compares in hourly rate to the parking garages in the area that seem to be insanely expensive for a suburban city’s downtown.

My college town also loved to ticket but like most towns I am familiar with generally only tickets you once unless you are parked their way too long. However, their were some real pond scum that would park their car, and if someone had a ticket nearby, they would take that ticket and place it under their windshield so they didn’t need to feed the meter. I assume the other poor sap would get ticked again.

That’s pure “you were the least annoying person the ALJ dealt with so far that day, so rather than be a hardass they just gave you want you wanted”... but as a person who usually gets my own shit dismissed that way, I endorse it, as I did in response to you and re the time stamps directly to Dr. Z. Always worth a shot. Glad to know that shot sometimes works in Kirkland!

I don’t think they can mark tires anymore because it is an unreasonable trespass under the 4th amendment. This was the 6th Circuit last year s o I am not sure if it was appealed (different circuit courts in the US can have totally different rulings that are both good law until someone appeals the issue up to the Supreme court and the set the precedent) . I bet the city came up with another less violating method.

It was a pleasant surprise, for sure, and no hassle to skip out of work in Woodinville for a bit, either time. Had it taken more effort, I likely wouldn’t have bothered.
![]() 08/04/2020 at 03:15 |

It would mean that you could park your car for 6 months here and only pay one ticket which would not make any sense.
![]() 08/04/2020 at 07:39 |

Looks like they gave you proof that it was moved. On the left ticket, they marked it at one location at 3:24, on the right, they issued the ticket in a different location at 3:25.

I'll allow for multiple day tickets, that makes sense. But multiple tickets on the same day in the same spot seems fucky.

Must still be kosher in the 9th circuit because it’s common practice here.

I once got a ticket before the meter expired. I was running to my car because I know how the campus police are with these. The guy was anticipating me not getting back in time and was writing the ticket BEFORE it expired. I fought the ticket and got it waved, but what a douche move by that guy
